CLZ Books vs Libib

CLZ Books vs Libib: two catalog apps, compared on facts

CLZ Books vs Libib is a fair question once your shelves outgrow your memory. Both apps catalog books by ISBN and keep the list in their own cloud, yet they are priced and shaped for different people. We compare the two on facts first, then show where Librisync, which starts from a photo of a shelf, fits as a third option.

    How Librisync helps

We checked every CLZ and Libib fact on this page on 17 October 2026 against clz.com, CLZ's US App Store listing and libib.com, including Libib's pricing page. Plans and prices move, so read them as a snapshot and confirm on each vendor's site before you sign up.

    CLZ Books or Libib

Both apps scan ISBNs and sync to the cloud, so it is hard to tell which one fits your shelves and your budget.

CLZ Books vs Libib at a glance

Libib describes itself as cloud cataloging for libraries, schools, organizations and home catalogs. One account can hold books, board games, movies, music and video games side by side, in up to 100 collections, with free apps for iOS and Android. CLZ Books is a dedicated book app from CLZ, which publishes separate apps for comics, movies, games and music. It comes as a mobile app for iOS and Android and as CLZ Books Web, which CLZ describes as online library software with no downloads. Both scan ISBN barcodes, both fill in book details automatically, and both sync your catalog between devices through their own cloud. The differences show up in price, in how deep each one goes on books, and in who each one is built for.

Price and free tier, as of October 2026

Here Libib is the more generous of the two, and we want to say that plainly. Its Basic plan costs nothing, needs no credit card, shows no ads and holds up to 5,000 items; Libib calls it perfect for home libraries. Libib Pro costs USD 9 a month or USD 99 a year, raises the limit to 100,000 items and is aimed at educators, organizations, power users and commercial use. CLZ Books is a paid subscription after a free 7-day trial. On clz.com, CLZ Books Mobile is listed at USD 19.95 a year and CLZ Books Web at USD 39.95 a year; the US App Store also shows monthly billing at USD 1.99. If you choose CLZ Books or Libib on cost alone, a home library has to grow very large before Libib asks for money.

How CLZ and Libib add books, and what they keep

CLZ is built around the book itself. You scan the ISBN barcode, let the app read the printed ISBN by OCR, or search CLZ's database by author and title; CLZ says it recognizes over 40 million ISBNs. In 2026, CLZ Books Mobile added reading history in February, custom fields in July and more images per book in September, so each record can get very detailed. Libib takes a broader route. You scan ISBN or UPC barcodes with its mobile apps or a physical scanner, or enter items by hand, then tag, group, review and annotate them with searchable notes. Basic already includes statistics, import and export, and lets you mark items as completed. Pro adds lending and holds, patron management, batch editing and reports, in the plan Libib aims at educators, organizations, power users and commercial use.

Where Librisync fits next to CLZ Books or Libib

Librisync is a third route, not the winner of this comparison. It starts from a photo: you point your camera at a shelf and the AI recognizes several books at once, with title, author, cover and ISBN. That works without a barcode, as long as the cover or spine is visible, and a single book can still go in by barcode or ISBN in seconds. Around the catalog, Librisync counts every book marked unread, logs reading progress, shows which volume of a series is missing and notes who borrowed which book. Duplicate titles are caught during scan review. The trade-off is size: Librisync is free up to 100 books, far below Libib's 5,000 free items. Beyond 100 books, LibriSync Pro is available from €2.99 a month, €24.99 a year, or €49.99 for lifetime access.

    Methodology

This comparison looks at capture speed, metadata review, privacy, reading context, sharing, and how much work each tool creates once a personal collection grows.

    Librisync pros

    • Photo-first capture for real shelves
    • Private organization with reading context
    • Duplicate checks and wishlist in the same workflow

    Trade-offs

    • Newer ecosystem than long-established catalog tools
    • Best suited to personal libraries, not institutional circulation systems

    What to look for

    How big your collection is

Libib Basic covers up to 5,000 items for free, and Pro up to 100,000. CLZ Books is a yearly subscription after the 7-day trial, or monthly in the US App Store. Librisync is permanently free up to 100 books, and LibriSync Pro starts from €2.99 a month, €24.99 a year, or €49.99 for lifetime access.

What else sits on your shelves

Libib puts books, board games, movies, music and video games in one account. CLZ keeps them in separate apps, such as CLZ Movies or CLZ Games. Librisync's scanner covers books, comics and manga.

How you like to capture books

Both start from the ISBN barcode. Among their other routes, CLZ names OCR of the printed ISBN and search by author and title; Libib names physical scanners and manual entry. Librisync starts from a shelf photo and adds barcode or ISBN scans for single books.

    Lending and sharing

In Libib, lending and holds are part of Pro; Libib Basic can publish a list of your items. CLZ Books Web keeps track of books you loan out, with a Loan Manager, and CLZ Cloud lets you view and share your collection online. Librisync notes who borrowed which book and publishes your library, shelves or wishlists by link, which you can revoke at any time.

One shelf, one evening: test CLZ Books or Libib yourself

Take about thirty books from one shelf, ideally a mix of new paperbacks and older editions printed before barcodes were common. Add them to a free Libib Basic account, then start CLZ's 7-day trial and add the same books there. If you want to try the third route too, set up Librisync in 30 seconds and photograph the shelf. Afterwards compare three things: how long each app took, which details each one kept, and which list you would rather search on your phone. Finally, count your whole collection. Past 5,000 items, Libib means Pro; past 100 books, Librisync offers LibriSync Pro for unlimited books.

    Questions people ask

Is Libib free, and is CLZ Books free?
As of October 2026, Libib Basic is free for up to 5,000 items, with no credit card and no ads. CLZ Books is a paid subscription after a free 7-day trial: USD 19.95 a year for Mobile and USD 39.95 a year for Web on clz.com. Librisync is free for up to 100 books, permanently, with no credit card needed, far fewer than the 5,000 items in Libib Basic; you can, however, scan your shelves by photo as often as you like at no cost.
Can I catalog board games or films next to my books?
In Libib, yes, in the same account: books, board games, movies, music and video games can sit in mixed collections. CLZ uses separate apps for that, such as CLZ Movies and CLZ Games. Librisync is built for books; its scanner covers books, comics and manga, so a shelf of DVDs is better served elsewhere.
Can I bring a Libib or CLZ list into Librisync?
Yes, if you export your Libib or CLZ collection as a CSV, Excel, or JSON file. Librisync supports importing these files directly in the manual book entry screen, where you can preview recognized titles, verify mappings, review duplicate warnings, and add them with one click. Alternatively, shelf photos and barcode scans let you capture books quickly.
Is Librisync a better choice than CLZ Books or Libib?
We would not say so in general. If your collection runs into the thousands, Libib's free plan covers far more than Librisync's 100 free books, and CLZ goes deep on book records. Librisync suits you if you would rather start from a shelf photo and keep unread books, series and loans in view.

Build the book system around your real shelves

Start with a few books or scan a whole shelf. Librisync keeps the structure useful after the first import.
